Audi RS 3

Importing a used Audi RS 3 from the USA

The RS 3 is the pocket rocket with the soundtrack no rival can match: a turbocharged five-cylinder engine with an off-beat firing order that snarls where four-cylinders drone. In the United States the RS 3 has only ever been sold as a sedan, and it built a devoted following, so the American used market is a strong source of well-kept, enthusiast-owned cars. USCar Trader works purely as a broker for used US vehicles, helping buyers in Germany and the EU source, inspect and import an RS 3 with the customs facts stated plainly. Here is what matters before importing a used Audi RS 3 from the USA.

Production years and key changes

The US did not receive the early hatch RS 3; the American car is the sedan. The 8V RS 3 sedan arrived for the 2017 model year and ran to 2020, sharing much with the facelifted 8V range and carrying the RS design language of wider arches, quad-look exhausts and aggressive front intakes. After a gap the 8Y RS 3 sedan launched for 2022 on the MQB Evo platform, adding the clever RS Torque Splitter and a genuine drift-oriented RS Torque Rear mode. Both US generations are booted sedans only.

What is under the hood

The heart of every RS 3 is the 2.5-litre EA855 turbocharged inline-five (2480 cc) with its signature 1-2-4-5-3 firing order. The 8V US car produces 400 hp and around 354 lb-ft; the 8Y makes 401 hp but adds the trick rear differential. Both drive all four wheels through quattro and a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox, with launch control good for a 0–60 mph time in the high-three-second range — supercar pace from a compact sedan. The five-cylinder's character, not just its numbers, is why buyers seek these cars out.

Trims and body styles

The US RS 3 is offered as a single high specification rather than a ladder of trims, with option packages covering items such as the Dynamic package, carbon-ceramic front brakes, sport exhaust, Bang & Olufsen audio and RS design details. It is a sedan only — no Sportback in America. Because it is a focused halo car, most US examples are well equipped.

What the US market offers

RS 3 supply is smaller than the S3's — this is a niche, expensive-when-new car — but availability is real, concentrated in enthusiast hubs. Cars range from low-mileage collector-grade examples to more heavily used and sometimes tuned drivers. Because the RS 3 attracts spirited driving, history and honest disclosure of modifications and track use are essential. Dry-state cars offer the cleanest underbodies for a smooth inspection at home.

Who this import is for

The RS 3 suits the buyer who wants a genuinely fast, all-weather sedan with a unique engine note and everyday usability. It is also a smart target when a clean, documented US car appears in the exact colour and specification that is hard to find at home. If you would rather have something calmer, the S3 covers most of the pace with less intensity — but for the five-cylinder magic, only the RS 3 will do.

Reliability: trouble spots to check

The five-cylinder is a tough engine, but known Audi RS 3 common problems still deserve attention. As a direct-injection unit it accumulates carbon on the intake valves, so a walnut-blast clean becomes routine maintenance with mileage. Some earlier EA855 engines were subject to a coolant/thermostat recall, so check the VIN against any outstanding campaigns. The seven-speed dual-clutch is strong but the clutch packs and Haldex coupling are wear items, and hard launches accelerate that wear. Running costs are real: the RS 3 eats front tyres and brakes when driven hard, so uneven tyre wear or tired pads tell you how a car has lived. A stock, well-documented example with sensible service history is the one to chase.

US vs. Europe differences

US cars use amber side markers, US-spec headlights and no rear fog lamp, all of which a German inspection expects corrected. Speedometers read in mph and the MMI navigation is US-region. Some US cars carry different exhaust or emissions calibration than European equivalents; mechanically, though, the RS 3 shares its core with the European car, so parts and specialist support at home are excellent.

How the import works

The route: select the car and agree terms; verify VIN and origin and pull a full history report; secure payment through escrow; book ocean freight (container is often preferred for a car like this) to a port such as Bremerhaven; clear EU customs; present for TÜV and individual approval where required; then register. USCar Trader coordinates the whole chain and updates you at each stage.

Import duty, VAT and fees

Remember: no origin proof, no 0% duty – and 19% German import VAT is due on every import.

Two separate charges apply. Import duty: the 0% rate under EU Regulations 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 applies only where US origin is provable by VIN and plant code, with direct transport, valid 1 July 2026 to 31 December 2029. The RS 3 is built in Germany or Hungary, so US origin generally cannot be demonstrated and the standard car duty rate normally applies — we confirm the correct figure from your specific VIN before you commit. Separately, and in every case, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) is due on the customs value. We never advertise duty-free import and add no hidden margin.

From modifications to registration

Plan for a rear fog lamp, headlight conversion or adjustment to the European beam pattern, and clear odometer documentation. Any aftermarket exhaust, tune or suspension changes must be disclosed and, where relevant, backed by paperwork for approval. After the technical inspection the RS 3 is registered normally.

Pre-buy inspection points

Before you buy, check: full Carfax/AutoCheck history against the VIN; title status (clean vs. salvage/rebuilt); evidence of DSG, Haldex and oil-service intervals; front tyre and brake wear as a clue to how the car was driven; any tuning and whether it returns to stock; underbody and arches for rust; and any track-day history.

What buyers ask most

Is the US RS 3 only a sedan?

Yes, America received the sedan exclusively — there was no Sportback.

What makes the engine special?

The 2.5-litre turbocharged inline-five with its 1-2-4-5-3 firing order gives a distinctive sound no four-cylinder rival matches.

How quick is the imported RS 3?

Both generations make around 400–401 hp and hit 60 mph in the high-three-second range.

What are the main reliability concerns?

Intake carbon build-up, an early coolant/thermostat campaign to check, dual-clutch and Haldex wear, and high tyre/brake consumption.

Will I pay 0% customs duty?

Only with provable US origin. As the RS 3 is European-built, the standard rate normally applies, and the 19% import VAT always applies.

Does the 8Y really drift?

Yes, the 8Y adds the RS Torque Splitter and an RS Torque Rear mode for genuine rear-biased handling.

Are US cars often modified?

Some are, given the enthusiast base, so verify tuning and history carefully.

Can USCar Trader handle the full import?

Yes — from sourcing and escrow to freight, customs and TÜV preparation.
